IPS

Description​

The IPS is the aircraft's standby flight display.

It is built around an attitude indicator and displays airspeed, altitude, barometric pressure setting and magnetic heading. These essential flight parameters remain available in the event of a failure affecting the main displays.

It is located on the main panel and is powered by its own electrical circuit, independently of the main displays. Brightness is adjusted using the IPS Brightness Knob.

Attitude indicator​

The pitch ladder is graduated up to 80 degrees in both nose-up and nose-down attitudes. The upper blue section represents the sky, while the lower brown section represents the ground.

A bank-angle scale is marked around the edge of the display and graduated up to 90 degrees.

Flight path vector​

The VVI, represented by a winged circle, indicates the aircraft's flight path. Unlike the HUD VVI, it moves vertically only and does not indicate lateral drift.

Two short vertical lines appear below the symbol when the landing gear is down and locked.


The two chevrons indicate the aircraft's pitch attitude. When the VVI and the chevrons are vertically aligned, the angle of attack is zero.

Approach brackets​

In approach mode, two brackets, ] [, appear as shown above and indicate the emergency approach angle-of-attack reference, fixed at 12 degrees.

Unlike the adjustable target displayed on the HUD, the IPS brackets are fixed and appear only while approach mode is selected.

Airspeed and Mach​

Indicated airspeed is displayed in knots in the upper-left corner, while the Mach number is shown in the lower-left corner.

Below 30 knots indicated, both indications are replaced by dashes (---).

Altitude​

Indicated altitude is displayed in the upper-right corner, with the tens digit shown in a smaller font.

Barometric setting​

The active barometric pressure setting is displayed below the altitude in hectopascals.

The Baro Setting Knob adjusts the pressure setting used by all aircraft instruments.

The Altimeter STD Button provides quick access to the standard pressure setting of 1013.25 hPa. When standard pressure is selected, STD is displayed in lieu of the pressure value.

Compass​

The compass scale runs along the top of the display.

It is graduated every 5 degrees and labelled every 10 degrees. It always indicates magnetic heading.

Instrument test​

Pressing the IPS Test Button runs a display test:

  • Airspeed, Mach, altitude and barometric pressure fields are filled with nines.
  • The compass indicates north.
  • The attitude indicator shows a 10-degree left bank and a 10-degree pitch attitude.
